Meraki @ 110 Partition
A stepping stone for Meraki
After the nightmare at 190 Main St., 110 Partition (around the corner) became available. It was not the space that I envisioned my store being. There’s no other way to put this other than to say it was disgusting and in desperate need of renovation. But, I saw it as a stepping stone and did my best to put some lipstick on that pig. I told the landlord that I did not want to sign a lease because I didn’t know where I would want to be in a year, and he was fine with it. I gave him 30 days written notice that I was leaving on the 12th month, was given a post dated check for the return of my security deposit which bounced when I eventually deposited it. Asked him for 8 months where the money was, he repeatedly told me he didn’t have it - which means he was commingling, which is illegal - after 8 months, no security deposit back, I ended up in court where I finally got my money back. The judge told me I was not to speak and I was not entitled to anything other than my security deposit back. It did not matter that he broke 2 laws and created financial hardship for me. I was “not to speak.” That security deposit was what I had planned on using for my new space, which created a snowball effect financially for me.
